Syllabus
Course objectives:
By the end of this course, through e-learning, students will be able to improve their test scores (TOEIC & TOEFL) by building their academic vocabulary and grammar and improving their receptive fluency (reading and writing).
Course materials:
For this course we will be focusing on e-learning.
Evaluation:
There will be three methods of evaluation for this course; 1) participation and attendance, 2) blogging and 3) quizzes.
1) Participation and attendance – 20%
Participation and attendance are basic requirements of the program. Participation is evaluated during every class and is based on whether you participate in class, i.e. whether you participate in the activities during class. If you participate in class then you will receive full marks for that day. As for attendance, this will be evaluated as well for each class. Therefore, if you attend all and/or almost all of the classes then you will receive full marks for attendance. For your information, students who miss five classes or more cannot get course credit. If you are unable to attend class, you still are responsible for learning what was done and turning in assignments on time. It will not be possible to make up assignments without prior consent.
2) Writing a blog – 40%
All e-learning done, will be recorded by writing a blog. In your blog you will write about the sites that you visited and the five words you learned that week, etc. Further explanation and examples will be given about how to write the blog during the first class. You will need to write 15 blogs over the 15 week semester. All blogs must be written and completed by the 29th of January, 2010.
3) Quizzes – 40%
There will be two vocabulary quizzes throughout the semester. There will be one mid-semester quiz and a final quiz. Both quizzes will be personalized. Your instructor will choose ten words from the words that you have wrote on your blog throughout the semester. Each word will be listed and you will need to provide a synonym or definition for the word in English.
